Our fundamental philosophy is that proper nutrition is a balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates and isolating any one item doesn’t result in well balanced nutrition and health. Instead, we feel that nutrition is about the combined synergistic relationship of whole foods. The most important thing to consider is the overall dietary picture.
WHY AREN’t patterbars LOWer IN SUGAR?
Like everything else, not all sugars are created equal. How our bodies break down these sugar is extremely important: refined sugars are almost pure glucose and fructose, they rush directly to your bloodstream and can result in a rush of energy followed by an energy crash. On the other hand, naturally occurring sugars, as in fruit, have nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber which slow down the digestive process, resulting in a slow down of sugar moving into the bloodstream with less ‘rush and crash’, and a more steady energy.
Refined sugar from beets or sugar cane are often treated with synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other agents to create a uniform product. Not only are they empty calories that contain no nutrients, but they also contain chemicals. The Food and Drug Administration has now classified honey (raw or refined), fruit juices, and some fruit purees and/or concentrates as “added sugar”.
Patterbar does not use any sweeteners like tapioca syrup, coconut nectar, agave, sugar alcohols, etc. While these are all technically considered to be “natural” sweeteners, they are heavily processed with little if any nutritional value, and none of the nutrients, antioxidants and fiber found in whole fruit. These are lab-created compounds that have more to do with flavor chemistry than actual food. At Patterbar, we do not use any added sugars, instead they are all naturally occurring from the whole food fruits, nuts and seeds.
